Competition Obedience
The competition obedience classes require prior instructor approval. Priority enrollment is given to members of the GLKC.
Description:
Introduces and builds the foundation skills needed by the dog and handler to compete in obedience trials.
Target Dog and age range:
Handlers with dogs one year old or older who wish to compete in the beginner novice level of obedience
Goal:
To lay the foundation for competition obedience skills
Prerequisite skills:
- Work on leash around other dogs
- Sit
- Down
- Beginning recall
Skills covered in class:
- Attention
- Focus
- Heelwork
- Motivation-love of learning
- Stays
Promotion requirements:
Skills expected for novice obedience
Class size and duration:
- Maximum 8 dog/handler teams
- 8 weeks
- 1 hour per week
Equipment provided by the handler:
- Collar (buckle, quick release, or slip)
- Leash (4-6ft fabric or leather)
- Variety of soft, bite-sized treats
- Clicker (optional)

- Obedience jumps
- Mats
- Ring Gates

Prepares the dog and handler for the skills tested in the Companion Dog or Novice level of competition obedience trials.

Handlers with dogs one year of age or older who are preparing to compete at the novice level of obedience.
Goals:
To introduce skills needed for obedience competition
Prerequisite skills:
The dog and handler successfully completed the Foundations Competition Obedience Class. Prior approval from the instructor is required.
Skills covered in class:
Skills tested in the companion dog or novice level of competition
Promotion requirements:
Completion of a novice level competition title
Class size and duration:
- Maximum 6 dog/handler teams
- 8 weeks
- 1 hour per week
Equipment provided by the handler:
- Collar (buckle, quick release, or slip)
- Leash (4-6ft fabric or leather)
- Variety of soft, bite-sized treats
- Clicker (optional)

Goals:
To prepare the dog for the advanced levels of competition obedience
Prerequisite skills:
The dog and handler successfully completed the Foundations and Novice Competition Obedience Classes.
Skills covered in class:
Skills tested in the open and utility levels of competition
Promotion requirements:
Completion of a novice level competition title
Class size and duration:
- Maximum 6 dog/handler teams
- 8 weeks
- 1 hour per week

- Leash (4-6ft fabric or leather)
- Scent articles
- Gloves
- Regulation dumbbell set
